While some aircraft are designated as an LSA, some such as gyrocopters meet the definition of an LSA and can be flown with just a Sport Pilot certificate.
For a gyrocopter to be considered an LSA it must meet the following:
- 1,320 pounds maximum takeoff weight
- A maximum airspeed in level flight with maximum continuous power (Vh) of not more than 120 knots CAS under standard atmospheric conditions at sea level
- A maximum of only one passenger
- A single, reciprocating engine
- A fixed or ground-adjustable propeller (no constant speed propellers)
- A non-pressurized cabin, if equipped with a cabin
- Maximum airspeed of 120 knots
- Fixed landing gear
- A maximum stalling speed or minimum steady flight speed without the use of lift-enhancing devices (V s1 ) of not more than 45 knots CAS at the aircraft's maximum certificated takeoff weight and most critical center of gravity. (Note: Gyrocopters do not stall in the conventional sense so this does not apply.)
